The Leap Stories Live: Inspiring creatives and entrepreneurs in Adelaide
On Monday 10 April, The Leap Stories author Kylie Lewis hosted a sold-out event at coworking space and retail hub Brick+Mortar Creative in Norwood, Adelaide.
Talking about finding the personal courage and financial capacity to make a leap and start a business, panellists Emma Kate Codrington of stationery brand EmmaKateCo, designer and content creator Mary Bills of Amuse Creative and ex-diplomat and now founder of Brick+Mortar Elizabeth Donaldson spoke with honesty and insight about what it takes to get out of your comfort zone and design a fulfilling career.
For Emma, it was an unexpected return to Australia from London that forced her to undertake steps to forming her own stationery range. Crowdfunding and an extended stint living back at home with her parents enabled her to financially back her business, to the point where her next leap will be to hire staff and build a sustainable business model independent of her physical location.
Once a passionate fitness instructor, a car accident forced Mary Bills to reassess her career future and pursue interior architecture, event planning and design. Now mum to two young girls, Mary’s current leap involves setting up her service-based social content development business that can be manageable around the demands of a young family.
And for Elizabeth, an almost two-decade-long career as a government diplomat bears little resemblance to her current role as founder of a cafe, retail and coworking space. But it was the redundancy package she put her hand up for and the hard work and commitment to building an authentic and sustainable space for Adelaide’s creative community to gather and grow that now fills her days with joy (despite the paperwork!).
The panel event ended with audience Q&A adding further insight and discussion amongst the panel guests. Each of the 60 creative and entrepreneurial Adelaidians gathered went home with new contacts, rekindled friendships and a copy of The Leap Stories to further inspire them make their own career leap.
